Field Sketching
The simple act of drawing in nature allows its calm and beauty to affect you in powerful ways. Deep observation of the type required for field sketching brings that connection even closer. This workshop will introduce a few techniques used by science illustrators: observation, measured drawing, creating texture and a basic understanding of using shading to create form.
Tote-ally Botanical
tote-ally botanical
Create colorful, one-of-a-kind botanical prints using leaves and other gathered plant materials. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the art of botanical printing using special fabric inks to transfer the textures, shapes, and patterns of plants onto tote bags. We’ll experiment with layering color, composition, and natural forms while learning simple techniques for creating vibrant prints on fabric.
This class invites participants to slow down, observe closely, and co-create with the natural world through a playful and creative process. Each participant will leave with their own hand-printed tote bag inspired by the beauty of the season.

Artist Bio
Whether I am gathering leaves for an eco-print, extracting color from plants and fungi, photographing a landscape, or walking quietly through a forest, my creative practice starts with observation. Nature is not simply my subject; it is my collaborator. Every leaf, every season, every shift in weather leaves its own mark, reminding me that beauty emerges through relationship rather than control.
Through my work and my teaching, I invite others to slow down, cultivate curiosity, and discover the joy of co-creating with nature. My hope is that each creative experience becomes more than an art project; that it becomes a conversation with the living world, fostering wonder, stewardship, and a deeper sense of belonging.
Plein Air Landscapes in Oils
Plein Air Landscapes in Oils
workshop Presented by Oregon Coast Council for the Arts
In this class we will embrace the unpredictable nature of plein air painting. Painting outdoors is a delightful way to immerse your senses and live in the moment, as well as an exercise in relinquishing control and rewriting expectations.
This class is designed as an introduction to both plein air and oil painting; no previous experience is necessary. Each student will be provided with a chair and a makeshift box of materials for painting in oils that will serve as a lap-easel. Expect to be flexible standing or sitting with materials on your lap. There could be rain, mosquitos, sun in your eyes, and all manner of unpredictable elements!
As a group, led by the instructor's demonstration, we will paint three small studies to explore the nature of oil paint as well as different ways to capture the natural world around us. One will focus on a broad impression, one on how to depict a tree, and another on an up-close specimen. After this each student will be provided with a small panel to create a painting of their choice. Students will leave with their studies and final painting.
Note: This class includes a 30 minute lunch break.

Grieving in Nature: Can connecting with nature help us heal?
Most of us know about the physical and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors. But did you know that getting outside can assist in grieving and processing loss? In this conversation, we’ll discuss how our connections to nature provide context and understanding around grieving. Can a deeper connection with nature and the outdoors provide additional value and perspective?
“Grieving in Nature” will be facilitated by Adam Sawyer. Adam is an outdoor and travel writer, photographer, published author, guide, and public speaker based in the Northwest. Nature has been a critical component in helping him process the grief from the sudden and tragic loss of his partner and home in 2022. His weekly Substack newsletter, Collecting Sunsets, covers a broad set of topics including grief, addiction and recovery, travel, life, love, and the healing powers of nature.
Yakona’s Conversation in Yakona series hosts gatherings of community members led by a facilitator in discussions that are thought-provoking, inspire reflection, and nurture a deepened understanding of our place in the natural world.
“Grieving in Nature” is limited to 15 participants on a first come basis and will take place in an open air, outdoor pavilion. We will walk about 100 feet on a sloped gravel path, then climb three steps with no handrail, to reach the pavilion. Participants will be sitting on wooden benches for about 1 ½ hours. A light snack and beverage will be provided. The nearest restrooms are about a ¼ mile walk or drive away. If mobility issues are a concern, please contact us and we will discuss the space with you in more detail.
Event is free; donations welcomed.

Forest Therapy
forest therapy
workshop presented by oregon coast council for the arts
Forest therapy originated with the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, which translates to “forest bathing,” developed in the 1980s to promote physical and mental health. Forest therapy broadly means taking in, through all of one’s senses, the forest atmosphere. It is focused on slowing down and appreciating all aspects of the environment. As we gather in nature for this class, our Forest Therapy certified instructor, Jaime Lee Hart, will be your guide offering structured invitations to immerse yourself deeper in your senses. The experience isn’t prescriptive and tends to be extremely individual. People report feeling relaxed, more connected to themselves, to nature, to each other and to their creativity.

Wild Impressions of Autumn
Wild Impressions of autumn: Botanical Monoprints in Watercolor
In this hands-on experience at Yakona, participants will explore monoprinting with watercolor paint using leaves, stems, and other botanical materials as both subject and tool. Drawing inspiration from Yakona’s living landscape, we’ll experiment with layering color, texture, and organic forms, pressing plants onto paper to create one-of-a-kind prints that reflect close observation and a sense of place. The class emphasizes curiosity and play over precision, inviting participants to slow down, engage with the natural world, and respond intuitively to what emerges on the page. All materials are provided. Participants will leave with a variety of frame-worthy art, including a large print, handmade card, gift bag, and bookmarks.
Note: This class includes a short nature walk on uneven terrain.

Carly Kay
Art is where I express myself, where I unleash my vulnerability. It is where I release fear and where I am courageous. Each time I put paint to brush, I tell a little bit more of my story.
I am drawn to the natural world: plants, animals, forests, water, sky and landscapes. As I create, my desire is to connect the viewer with the wonder of and need to protect this world and its inhabitants. Using nature as my inspiration brings me harmony and speaks to my soul.
Rena Olson
I believe art begins with paying attention.

Mindfulness & Macro Photography: Autumn Session
Mindfulness & Macro Photography
This mindful macro photography experience invites participants to slow down and see Yakona’s living landscape up close. We’ll wander forest trails and edges, with opportunities to closely observe and photograph mosses, lichens, fungi, and other plant life, as well as any wildlife we may encounter. Rather than focusing on technique or instruction, this gathering centers on presence: noticing light, texture, form, and the quiet relationships unfolding at ground level.
This experience is designed for photographers of all experience levels who are comfortable working independently and are interested in deepening their relationship with place through attentive seeing. Rather than an instructional workshop, this gathering offers time, access, and shared presence.
Note: Our exploration will take place along well-established trails with hilly terrain and sustained grades of up to 12%. Those with mobility challenges, breathing difficulties, or balance concerns will find this experience difficult.

Mindfulness & Macro Photography
Mindfulness & Macro Photography
This mindful macro photography experience invites participants to slow down and see Yakona’s living landscape up close. We’ll wander forest trails and edges, with opportunities to closely observe and photograph mosses, lichens, flowers, fungi, and other plant life, as well as any wildlife we may encounter.
Our exploration will take place along well-established trails with hilly terrain and sustained grades of up to 12%. Those with mobility challenges, breathing difficulties, or balance concerns will find this experience difficult.
Sturdy hiking shoes are required. Please bring ample drinking water, snacks, and a packed lunch; we will pause for refreshments along the trail. Participants are encouraged to come prepared for a slow, attentive walk, periods of stillness, and a day immersed in nature.

Together, we’ll harvest what the land offers and prepare a unique wild food dish to share, celebrating the flavors of the day and the place that provides them.
Plants that may be ready for gathering include stinging nettle, plantain, dandelion, chickweed, and evergreen tips.
Foraging will take place along forest trails with hilly terrain and sustained grades of up to 12%. This experience will be challenging for those with mobility limitations, balance concerns, or breathing difficulties. Relationships for resilience
Join us for a community conversation about the role of relationships in our lives. This conversation, presented in partnership with Oregon Humanities, explores how individual self-care and transformation can be overemphasized to the detriment of our human communities and the rest of the living world. We will discuss how we can work with others to name the qualities and practices that underpin resilience and bring our insights more intentionally to bear in our human relationships and our relationships with our lands, waters, and ecosystems.
Relationships for Resilience will be facilitated by Christina deVillier. Christina joins us from the mountains of Northeast Oregon where she is a writer, a gardener, and the Connections Coordinator for Greater Hells Canyon Council.
This event will be our second Conversation in Yakona. This new program will host gatherings of community members led by a facilitator in discussions that are thought-provoking, inspire reflection, and nurture a deepened understanding of our place in the natural world.
This event is limited to 15 participants on a first come basis and will take place in an open air, outdoor pavilion.

Art with Nora Sherwood
Have you ever been curious about how a science illustrator approaches creating illustrations? This workshop will introduce a few tools used by science illustrators like basic observation techniques, measured drawing skills, and a little knowledge of anatomy, and give you the opportunity to work on some of these techniques with guidance and demos by Nora.
Intuitive Approach to Plant Knowledge
Learning the language of plants doesn't have to be difficult or intimidating. Identifying plants typically came first through intuitive perception, and naming came later based on the plants' properties.
This class moves away from an academic approach to classification and introduces the idea that the plants themselves can serve as our guides. Through mindful practices of stillness and whole-body listening, we will engage both the mind and body in a different way of learning about the properties of plants and trees, as well as their names and phenologies. Participants will leave with an intuitive approach and common mnemonics to help build a more intimate relationship with their environment.

Rick Bartow Film Festival-Lincoln City
A Benefit to Rebuild the Rick Bartow Art Studio at Yakona
Celebrate the life and legacy of acclaimed artist Rick Bartow at a special film festival dedicated to restoring the place where his creative spirit thrived.
About the Festival
This thoughtfully curated event features films inspired by and focusing on the life and artwork of Oregon artist Rick Bartow. Through these powerful stories, we honor his extraordinary contributions to the world of art.
Why We’re Fundraising
All proceeds will go toward rebuilding Rick Bartow’s original art studio—his creative sanctuary on generational land. Though Bartow worked in many spaces throughout his life, this humble studio held deep personal meaning. It offered solitude and inspiration and was featured in scenes from The Line and Legacy of Rick Bartow.
After his passing, the land was sold and the studio faced demolition. In a careful preservation effort, we salvaged over 80% of its original structure. Now, we’re bringing it back to life at Yakona, where it will once again inspire creativity and connection through our HeART Connections art education program.
Be Part of the Legacy
Your support helps preserve an important piece of cultural and artistic history—and ensures that Bartow’s vision continues to impact future generations.
