The Enduring Role of Wilderness

Join us on June 6th from 1:00pm to 3:30pm for a community conversation about "The Enduring Role of Wilderness." The concept of wilderness includes legal, philosophical, and spiritual meanings. Despite its shifting roles, wilderness endures as an appealing notion. Whether found in vast 'uncouched' spaces or a pocket of wild in a neighborhood, fostering a relationship with nature requires leaving it unburdened by human interruption. What does wilderness mean to you? In what ways might we extend the concept of wilderness to a grounded, placed-based dialogue between us and the natural world?

“The Enduring Role of Wilderness” will be facilitated by Paul Lask. Paul is a writer and educator focusing on the outdoors, environment, and science. He teaches writing and literature at Oregon Coast Community College.

Yakona’s Conversation in Yakona series hosts gatherings of community members led by a facilitator in discussions that are thought-provoking, inspire reflection, and nurture a deepened understanding of our place in the natural world.

“The Enduring Role of Wilderness” is limited to 15 participants on a first come basis and will take place in an open air, outdoor pavilion. We will walk about 100 feet on a sloped gravel path, then climb three steps with no handrail, to reach the pavilion. Participants will be sitting on wooden benches for about 1 ½ hours. A light snack and beverage will be provided. The nearest restrooms are about a ¼ mile walk or drive away. If mobility issues are a concern, please contact us and we will discuss the space with you in more detail.

Registration for this free event is required.
